When someone asks, “How much can it lift?” the answer isn’t always as simple as a single number.
Just like a forklift’s capacity changes depending on the load center, a crane’s lifting capacity depends on several factors. Load weight, load dimensions, pick radius, boom configuration, and the position of the load all play a role in determining what can be lifted safely.
That’s why professional lifting equipment is rated using detailed load charts instead of one maximum capacity number.
For example, a crane may be capable of lifting its maximum rated capacity only under specific conditions. As the load moves farther away from the machine or the lifting geometry changes, the available capacity changes as well.
This is one reason it’s important to discuss your actual application—not just the weight of the load. Two pieces of equipment that each weigh 20,000 pounds may require completely different lifting solutions depending on their dimensions, center of gravity, and where they need to be placed.
