When it comes to heart-of-the-line forklifts (3K–10K warehouse and general-purpose trucks), the attachment options are far more specialized than most people realize. Everyone knows about a Sideshift or Fork Positioner… but not everyone knows the difference between a push pull and box clamp.

Sideshifters — The Modern Standard

This attachment is so standard that if you see a truck in the field, 9 out of 10 times it will have this attachment on it.

What it does:

Moves the forks hydraulically left and right without repositioning the truck.

Why it matters:

This is the most common attachment across all makes and models. The ability to move the forks without having to get off the lift to manually adjust them is invaluable. The list of reasons extend from work flow to improved safety. This has become so standard most dealers quote it as standard. And chances are, it’s on your current forklift.

Fork Positioners (Shifter Spreaders)

One of the biggest productivity boosters in high-throughput operations.

What they do:

Allow operators to hydraulically widen or narrow fork spacing from the seat.

Best for:

  • Mixed pallet sizes
  • Fast-paced shipping operations
  • Facilities constantly changing load widths

This item is the second most popular attachment and oftentimes is paired with a Side Shift. Like the side shift, it’s a highly versatile attachment that’s used across many applications for its ease of use. Another note Sideshifts and Fork Positioners are valuable add ons when it comes to reselling used lifts as well.

Single-Double Attachments

This is where efficiency jumps significantly in distribution environments.

What they do:

Allow the operator to handle the pallet normally OR to handle two pallets side-by-side simultaneously.

Best for:

  • Beverage distribution
  • Grocery warehouses
  • High-volume shipping operations
  • Brick Yards

Moving two pallets at once can dramatically increase throughput, but there’s a tradeoff. The added weight of the attachment does reduce overall forklift capacity. So when you’re looking to add one of these attachments; make sure you’re being quoted a truck that can still handle your operational capacity with it on the front end.

Push-Pull Attachments

These are highly specialized but extremely effective in the right operation.

What they do:

Allow forklifts to handle loads on slip sheets instead of pallets and are only needed in specific applications. Chances are, if you need one of these, you already know it. If you’re not sure, it’s very likely this one isn’t for you.

Best For:

  • Food distribution
  • Beverage
  • Export operations

It’s not uncommon to see units like these side by side with standard lift with forks and a side shift. The purpose of these trucks is not versatile. They perform a task and they do it well.

Paper Roll, Carton & Appliance Clamps

A completely different style of handling.

What they do:

Allow operators to handle large paper rolls without pallets.

Best For:

  • Anywhere that manufactures paper products
  • Appliance distribution
  • Beverage
  • Furniture operations

These attachments are going to allow you faster handling of your products and a reduced dependency on pallets. However, you need to make sure it gets quoted properly as incorrect pressure from the clamp will lead to destroyed products.

The Most Important Thing Most Buyers Miss

Every attachment:

  • Adds weight
  • Changes load center
  • Reduces forklift capacity

And some attachments reduce capacity dramatically.
