When shopping for a used forklift, most buyers focus on the obvious things:
While those things matter, they’re rarely what determines whether you’ve found a good machine. What separates a great deal from a financial nightmare is what’s hiding beneath the sheet metal. After more than 20 years in the forklift industry, I’ve seen companies save a few thousand dollars buying a cheaper forklift only to spend tens of thousands fixing major components shortly afterward.
Here are the five repairs that can destroy a forklift budget, and more importantly, how to spot the warning signs before you buy.
An electric forklift’s battery is often the single most expensive wear item on the machine. Depending on the voltage, capacity, and/or type; replacing an industrial battery can cost anywhere from $6,000 to well over $20,000. Very large batteries can even cost considerably more.
Many buyers assume that because an electric forklift starts and drives, the battery must be healthy. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Whenever possible, request:
A forklift with a weak battery can quickly become much more expensive than one with a higher purchase price and a healthy battery.
Few repairs surprise buyers more than a failed transmission. Whether it’s a powershift, hydrostatic, or electric drive system, transmission repairs can easily reach several thousand dollars and much more on larger forklifts.
Always operate the forklift long enough for the transmission to reach operating temperature. Many problems don’t appear until the machine has been working for 15–20 minutes.
The mast is the heart of every forklift. It’s also one of the most expensive assemblies to rebuild.
Repairs may include:
On larger forklifts, mast repairs can become extremely expensive due to the size and weight of the components.
Raise the mast fully if possible. Problems often become much more noticeable near maximum lift height.
Internal combustion forklifts are incredibly durable but engines eventually wear out. Replacing an engine isn’t just expensive because of the engine itself.
There’s also:
A compression test can reveal far more than simply listening to the engine idle.
The drive axle quietly handles enormous loads every day. When it fails, repairs can be substantial. Large-capacity forklifts, especially those used in steel mills, ports, and heavy industrial applications, place tremendous stress on drive axles.
Drive axle repairs never get cheaper if they’re ignored.
One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is assuming a forklift is in excellent condition because it looks clean.
Fresh paint can hide:
Cosmetics matter far less than mechanical condition. I’d rather buy an honest forklift with scratched paint than a freshly painted machine hiding major problems.
Before recommending any used forklift, I spend far more time looking at its mechanical condition than its appearance.

Every one of these components tells part of the forklift’s story.
The best way to avoid these costly repairs is to identify problems before signing the purchase order.
That means performing a complete inspection, test driving the forklift and reviewing maintenance records. Look beyond cosmetic appearance and buy from someone who understands the equipment. The cheapest forklift on the market often becomes the most expensive one to own.
Every used forklift has a history. The question is whether you’re buying a machine that’s been properly maintained or inheriting someone else’s expensive repair bill. A quality forklift isn’t simply the one with the lowest hours or the lowest price. It’s the one that’s been cared for, inspected thoroughly, and matched to the application it was built to handle.
That’s why I encourage buyers to look beyond the paint, beyond the hour meter, and beyond the asking price. The real value of a forklift lies in its mechanical condition and the confidence you have in its future reliability.

One of the biggest mistakes I see forklift owners make isn’t buying the wrong equipment—it’s ignoring the warning signs their current forklift is giving them. Forklifts rarely fail without warning. In most cases, they begin “talking” long before a major breakdown occurs. A strange noise, a slight vibration, a hydraulic leak, or steering that doesn’t feel quite right are often early indicators that something needs attention.
The companies that listen to those warning signs usually avoid expensive repairs and unplanned downtime. The companies that ignore them often end up with a forklift that stops working at the worst possible time. After more than 20 years in the forklift industry, here are ten warning signs I never ignore.
A small puddle under your forklift may not seem like a big deal… until it becomes one.
Hydraulic leaks can indicate:
Ignoring a small leak can eventually lead to:
If you notice fresh hydraulic oil, investigate it sooner rather than later. Just last week someone showed me spots underneath their truck and they indicated that management would likely ignore the issue. Doing so will only exacerbate the issue while adding unnecessary risk to the work environment.
Forklifts shouldn’t suddenly start making new sounds.
Listen for:
Every sound tells a story. Sometimes it’s nothing more than a worn belt. Other times it’s a failing transmission, hydraulic pump, wheel bearing, or mast component. Don’t turn the radio up louder! Find the source or at the very least report the noise to management so they can deal with the issue.
If your forks seem slower than they used to be, your forklift is trying to tell you something.
While it could be as something small and simple as being low on hydraulic fluid or dirty filters; it could indicate something more urgent like a worn pump or internal cylinder leakage. If you’re using an electric forklift this could indicate that your battery is starting to go bad and may need to be replaced.
Reduced lift speed often develops gradually, making it easy to overlook until productivity starts suffering. Try to be mindful of things like this while operating your unit.
Forklifts should feel predictable.
If steering begins to wander, feel loose and sloppy, require constant correction and/or develop excessive play; don’t assume it’s normal wear. Steering components are critical safety items and should be inspected promptly.
For LP and diesel forklifts especially, difficult starting usually means something is changing.
Possible causes include:
Even if it starts today, tomorrow it might not. These problems do not go away on their own and only continue to get worse.
For electric forklifts, the battery tells its own story.
Watch for:
A healthy battery should provide consistent performance shift after shift.
Changes usually indicate it’s time for testing, not guessing. Just keep in mind that Led Acid batteries (the most common forklift battery) will have reduced lifting power as the battery loses its charge. Lithium batteries will still continue to maintain the same lift power even as the battery depletes.
Tires reveal a surprising amount about a forklift’s health.
Uneven wear can point to:
Replacing tires without fixing the underlying cause usually means you’ll be replacing another set sooner than expected.
The mast should operate smoothly throughout its travel.
Warning signs include:
The mast handles every load your forklift lifts. Ignoring mast problems isn’t just expensive, it can become a serious safety issue.
Many people assume overheating only happens during hot weather. Not true.
Overheating can result from:
Heat is one of the fastest ways to shorten the life of an engine or hydraulic system. It’s also the issue that’s most often ignored with forklifts.
This may be the most valuable warning sign of all. Experienced operators spend hundreds or even thousands of hours behind the wheel. When they tell you, “Something doesn’t feel right.”
Believe them.
Many major failures begin with subtle changes that experienced operators notice long before anyone else. Listening to your operators can prevent costly downtime.
One of the biggest misconceptions in maintenance is that delaying repairs saves money. In reality, small issues have a habit of becoming expensive ones. A leaking hydraulic hose can damage a pump. A worn bearing can destroy an axle. A neglected cooling system can lead to a complete engine overhaul.
Addressing problems early almost always costs less than waiting for a failure.
The companies with the fewest breakdowns usually aren’t lucky. They simply have good maintenance programs.
Routine inspections help identify:
Preventive maintenance isn’t just about keeping forklifts running. It’s about protecting productivity.
Your forklift is constantly communicating its condition. The question is whether anyone is listening.
Most major breakdowns don’t happen without warning. They begin with small changes; a new noises, slower performance, unusual wear, or subtle differences that are easy to ignore. The companies that pay attention to those warning signs usually experience fewer breakdowns, lower repair costs, and longer equipment life.

One of the most common questions I hear is “is that a lot of hours?” It’s a fair question, but it’s also one of the hardest to answer with a binary answer. I’ve seen forklifts with more than 30,000 hours still working every day, and I’ve seen machines with fewer than 3,000 hours that were ready for the scrapyard. The truth is that a forklift’s lifespan depends far more on how it was used, maintained, and matched to the application than the number on the hour meter.
After more than 20 years in the forklift industry, here’s how I explain it to customers.
Most people compare forklift hours to miles on a car. That’s a good starting point, but it isn’t the whole story.
Imagine two pickup trucks:
Both may have 100,000 miles, but they’re in completely different condition. Forklifts are no different.
While every application is different, these are reasonable expectations for well-maintained equipment.

Notice the overlap. Maintenance often matters more than fuel type.
Modern AC electric forklifts are incredibly durable and can be easier to maintain due to the fact they have fewer moving parts, no engine oil, no transmission clutches and less vibration. Many electric forklifts actually outlast comparable internal combustion trucks.
The biggest wear item is often the battery.
A quality industrial battery may last Approximately 1,500–2,000 charge cycles or 6 – 10 years, but can sometimes last even longer with proper watering and maintenance. When the battery reaches the end of its life, the forklift itself often has many productive years remaining.
LP forklifts remain one of the most versatile machines in the industry.
They’re ideal for indoor/outdoor use, multiple shifts, quick refueling and overall general manufacturing. Like any engine-powered equipment, longevity depends heavily on routine maintenance.
Regular servicing of engine oil, cooling system, ignition components, transmission & hydraulic system can dramatically extend service life.
Diesel forklifts are built for demanding applications.
You’ll commonly find them in:
Properly maintained diesel engines can operate for decades. While many high-capacity diesel forklifts undergo multiple engine rebuilds throughout their working lives.
This is where my experience has been especially valuable. High-capacity forklifts are often treated more like construction equipment than warehouse equipment.
They’re designed for:
These machines frequently receive engine, transmission & full mast rebuilds; as well as hydraulic overhauls and axle repairs. Instead of replacing the entire machine, owners often rebuild major components and continue operating the truck for many more years. I’ve seen properly maintained heavy-capacity forklifts exceed 30,000 hours and remain productive.
Many buyers assume a forklift has reached the end of its life simply because it has high hours. That’s rarely true.
A forklift reaches the end of its economic life when:
Notice that hours aren’t on that list.
This is one of the most important conversations I have with customers.
Generally speaking, rebuilding makes sense when:
Replacement becomes the better option when:
Sometimes rebuilding saves tens of thousands of dollars. Sometimes replacement is the smarter investment. Every situation is different.
Consider these examples.
A forklift running one shift on smooth concrete floors in a clean environment may accumulate 15,000 hours with relatively little wear.
Now compare that to a forklift working outside in the heat and dust, moving heavy loads with multiple shifts per day. Those same 15,000 hours represent a much harder life.
The application tells the real story.
When evaluating a used forklift, I care more about:
The hour meter is just one piece of the puzzle.
People often ask me, “How long should a forklift last?”
My answer is always the same: A well-maintained forklift should last as long as it continues to safely and economically perform the job you need it to do.
I’ve seen older forklifts outperform newer ones simply because they were maintained correctly and matched to the right application. Buying (or keeping) the right forklift isn’t about chasing the lowest hours. It’s about understanding the machine’s condition, maintenance history, and the work you expect it to perform.

After more than 20 years in the forklift industry, people are sometimes surprised when I tell them, “I don’t think you should buy this forklift.” It sounds like a strange thing for someone in equipment sales to say. After all, my job is to sell forklifts. But I’ve learned that the best long-term business relationships aren’t built on closing every deal. They’re built on helping customers make the right decision, even when that decision doesn’t benefit me today.
Here are reasons why i sometimes tell my customers NOT to buy from me.
Not every aging forklift needs to be replaced. If a truck has a solid powertrain, readily available parts, and the repair costs make financial sense, I’ll often recommend repairing it instead of replacing it. Too many companies replace equipment simply because it’s getting older, not because it’s no longer productive.
Bigger isn’t always better. I regularly see companies shopping for a 12,000-pound forklift when a properly equipped 8,000-pound truck would handle every load they have.
Buying more capacity than you need often means a higher purchase price, an increased maintenance costs, more expensive tires, higher fuel consumption and even reduced maneuverability. The right forklift is the one that fits your application, not the biggest one on the lot.
Sometimes the smartest purchase is no purchase at all. If you only need a specialty forklift for a shutdown, seasonal project, or short-term contract, renting can save thousands of dollars while eliminating long-term ownership costs. Many times your budget requires a fixed cost, with the maintenance included. Owning could lead to unpredicted costs and in those situations, renting will make more sense as well. While you pay more per month to rent than own; renting generally includes maintenance provided by the rental company.
The cheapest forklift is rarely the least expensive forklift to own. I’ve seen companies save a few thousand dollars on the purchase price only to spend far more on repairs, downtime, and lost productivity over the next year. Value is measured over the life of the machine, not just on the day you buy it.
A forklift can be mechanically perfect and still be the wrong machine.
Questions I always ask include:
If the answer to any of those questions is “no,” then it’s not the right forklift. It will only cost both of us to push you into the wrong lift only to have it returned.
Anyone can sell equipment. What matters is earning enough trust that when the time is right to buy, you’re the first person the customer calls. I’ve found that saying “not yet” or “this isn’t the right truck” often creates stronger relationships than pushing a sale that isn’t in the customer’s best interest.
In the end, my goal isn’t simply to sell another forklift; it’s to help companies make decisions that improve their operations and reduce their total cost of ownership. Sometimes that means selling a truck. Sometimes it means recommending a repair, a rental, or waiting for the right opportunity.
Those conversations may not produce an immediate sale, but they almost always build long-term trust and that’s worth far more than any single transaction.

Every week I talk with forklift dealers, plant managers, warehouse supervisors, rigging companies, steel processors, and business owners across the country. And no matter how experienced someone is, I still hear many of the same misconceptions about forklifts.
Some of these myths can cost companies thousands of dollars. Others can create safety issues or lead buyers to purchase the wrong equipment altogether. Here are nine of the most common forklift myths I hear and the truth behind each one.
This is probably the biggest misconception in the used forklift market.
I’ve seen 15,000-hour forklifts that were meticulously maintained and would outperform machines with only 3,000 hours. I’ve also seen low-hour forklifts that sat outside for years with neglected maintenance, dead batteries, and leaking hydraulics.
Hours matter but maintenance history matters far more. I’d rather buy a well-maintained 10,000-hour truck than a neglected 3,000-hour truck.
Many buyers assume buying a larger forklift is “future-proofing.”
In reality, oversized forklifts often mean:
The best forklift is the one that’s correctly sized for your application and not simply the biggest one available.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. One dealer’s “refurbished” forklift may consist of fresh paint, new decals, & pressure washing. Another may completely rebuild the truck with an engine overhaul, transmission rebuild, hydraulic repairs, new tires, mast restoration, & electrical repairs
Always ask exactly what was rebuilt, not just whether it was “refurbished.”
That may have been true years ago but today’s electric forklifts are incredibly capable. Modern AC electric trucks can operate multiple shifts, handle demanding warehouse applications, and significantly reduce operating costs. For many indoor operations, electric forklifts are often the better long-term investment.
I hear this one constantly. Two forklifts may both be rated at 5,000 pounds, yet have completely different lift heights, attachments, load centers, tire types and/or hydraulic options. The data tag tells only part of the story and a lot of the time things can be added or removed from the lift without the date tag being updated. Understanding the application is far more important than simply comparing capacity ratings.
Sometimes they do. Sometimes they absolutely don’t.
Auction purchases often include:
Many also have language in their terms that state you are responsible for inspecting the unit to confirm conditions before purchasing. And that if something has been missed the auction company is not liable for it. I’ve seen companies spend more fixing an auction purchase than they would have spent buying from a reputable dealer in the first place.
A low bid isn’t always the lowest cost.
I tell everyone, every major manufacturer builds quality equipment. The important question is? Can you get parts and service support? A fantastic forklift becomes a frustrating ownership experience if replacement parts take weeks to arrive or there isn’t a qualified technician nearby. Support should be part of every buying decision.
Just because a forklift can start perfectly, drive and lift normally does not mean it is in good condition and does not require thousands of dollars in repairs.
Things like:
Aren’t always obvious during a quick test drive. That’s why inspections from experts matter. An expert is going to understand what to look at to determine what kind of repairs the forklift might require.
Everyone wants a good deal. But the cheapest forklift often becomes the most expensive one after unexpected repairs, downtime, and lost productivity. The best value comes from purchasing the right machine from someone who understands your application and stands behind what they sell. A forklift is an investment—not just another purchase order.
One of the things I enjoy most about this business is helping customers separate fact from fiction. There are a lot of opinions in the forklift industry, but experience has taught me that the right decision almost always comes from asking the right questions, not chasing the lowest price.

When most companies purchase a forklift, they focus on capacity, fuel type, or price. While those are all important considerations, one of the most overlooked decisions is selecting the correct mast. The wrong mast can reduce visibility, prevent you from accessing storage racks, limit your lifting capabilities, or even create clearance issues with doorways and trailers.
Over the years, I’ve helped customers who initially requested one mast style only to discover another option was a much better fit for their application. Understanding the differences before purchasing can save both time and money.
But what are the real differences between a Simplex Mast, Duplex Mast & Tripple Stage Mast? Let’s look at the most common forklift mast configurations and where each performs best.
A simplex mast has a single stage and typically offers the lowest maximum lift height.
If your operation rarely stacks material above 8 to 10 feet, a simplex mast may be all you need.
A duplex mast features two stages and provides greater lift height than a simplex while maintaining relatively good visibility.
Some duplex masts include Full Free Lift “FFL”(see section 5 for more details), allowing the forks to raise several feet before the overall mast height increases.
The triplex mast is the most common configuration found in today’s warehouses. It provides excellent lift height while collapsing to a relatively compact overall height.
Many 5,000-pound warehouse forklifts are equipped with triplex masts ranging from approximately 185″ to over 300″ of lift height.
A quad mast uses four stages to achieve extremely high lift heights while maintaining manageable collapsed dimensions.
One specification many buyers overlook is free lift. Free lift allows the forks to rise without increasing the overall height of the mast.
This is extremely valuable when working:
Without free lift, the mast will strike the ceiling before the load is fully raised.
These two measurements are often confused.
The overall height of the mast when fully lowered.
This determines whether the forklift can pass through:
The highest point the forks can safely raise a load. These two dimensions work together and should always be evaluated before purchasing equipment.
While higher-stage masts offer greater flexibility, they also introduce more steel channels, hydraulic hoses, and lift chains into the operator’s line of sight. For applications requiring precise positioning or frequent pedestrian traffic, visibility becomes an important safety consideration. Modern mast designs have significantly improved visibility compared to older forklifts, but selecting only as much mast as your application requires is still good practice.
Attachments can dramatically change how a mast performs.
Examples include:
These attachments often reduce the forklift’s usable capacity and may require a different mast or revised capacity rating. Always evaluate the entire package, not just the forklift itself.

Answering these questions will often determine the best mast configuration for your operation.
The mast is much more than the lifting mechanism on a forklift, it’s one of the most important components affecting productivity, safety, and overall performance. Selecting the proper mast ensures your forklift fits your facility, safely handles your loads, and operates efficiently for years to come.

]]>Do you need a Forklift Buying Guide? Purchasing a forklift is a significant investment, and the wrong decision can cost far more than the purchase price. Over the past 15+ years in the material handling industry, I’ve seen companies spend thousands of dollars fixing problems that could have been avoided simply by asking the right questions before signing a purchase order.
Whether you’re buying a new, used, or refurbished forklift, these ten questions will help ensure you’re making the best decision for your operation.
This is the first question every buyer should ask. What are you lifting? How heavy are your loads? How high do you need to lift them? Will the forklift operate indoors, outdoors, or both? Will it be used continuously throughout the day or only occasionally?
A forklift that’s perfect for one application may be completely wrong for another. Buying based solely on capacity or price often leads to poor performance and higher operating costs.
One of the most misunderstood specifications on a forklift is its rated capacity.
A forklift rated at 5,000 pounds doesn’t necessarily lift 5,000 pounds in every situation. Load center, lift height, mast configuration, and attachments all affect the truck’s actual lifting capacity. Always ask for the capacity chart and verify the forklift will safely handle your heaviest load under real operating conditions.
Purchase price is only part of the equation.
Ask questions like:
Sometimes spending a little more upfront saves thousands over the life of the machine.
Maintenance records tell the story of a forklift. A machine with documented service intervals, repairs, and inspections is typically a much safer purchase than one with an unknown history. If service records aren’t available, have the forklift professionally inspected before making a decision.
This question is often overlooked. Buying a forklift from hundreds of miles away may seem like a great deal until you need warranty work or emergency repairs. Before purchasing, know exactly who will support the equipment after delivery. Finding a servicing dealer is as simple as a websearch sometimes.
Some older forklifts become difficult to maintain simply because replacement parts are scarce.
Ask about:
Easy access to parts reduces downtime and keeps operating costs predictable.
Not every “refurbished” forklift receives the same level of work. Ask exactly what was completed. Were the cylinders rebuilt? Were worn pins and bushings replaced? Were leaks repaired? Was the engine serviced or rebuilt? Or was it simply pressure washed and painted? Understanding the refurbishment process can prevent expensive surprises later.
The lowest purchase price isn’t always the best financial decision. Many businesses benefit from preserving working capital through financing or leasing. Review monthly payments, interest rates, warranty coverage, and total ownership costs before deciding. Some operations require a fixed cost that encompasses an all in one set monthly expense.

These features improve both productivity and workplace safety while reducing the likelihood of accidents.
The forklift itself is only part of the purchase. The dealer, wholesaler, or seller should have the experience to guide you toward the right solution, not simply the most expensive one. A knowledgeable supplier will ask about your application, discuss alternatives, explain trade-offs, and continue supporting you long after delivery. The right partner becomes a valuable resource throughout the life of your equipment.
The best forklift purchase isn’t always the newest machine or the lowest-priced option. It’s the forklift that best fits your application, is properly supported, and provides reliable performance for years to come.
By asking these ten questions before signing a purchase order, you’ll reduce risk, avoid unexpected costs, and make a more informed investment for your business.

]]>One of the questions I get asked the most is: “How can you tell if a used forklift is a good machine?”
My answer is always the same. Don’t start by looking at the paint.
I’ve inspected forklifts that looked almost brand new but needed tens of thousands of dollars in repairs. I’ve also inspected forklifts with faded paint, scratched body panels, and worn seats that turned out to be some of the best machines on the market.
Appearance can be deceiving.
After evaluating thousands of used forklifts over the years, I’ve learned that the real story is almost always hidden beneath the surface. Here are some of the first things I look for when determining whether a forklift has been well maintained or seriously abused.
The mast does all the heavy lifting. It’s also one of the easiest places to identify excessive wear.
I’m looking for:
A forklift that has spent years overloaded usually tells the story right here.
Lift chains don’t wear out overnight. They wear gradually over thousands of lift cycles.
Things I look for include:
Replacing lift chains on larger forklifts can become an expensive repair very quickly.
Grab the carriage. Try to shake it. Does it feel tight? Or does it rock excessively?
Too much movement can indicate:
This isn’t something you’ll notice from across the parking lot. You have to physically inspect it.
This is one of my biggest red flags. Repairs aren’t automatically bad. Quality repairs happen every day.
But I pay close attention to repairs on:
Poor welds often tell me the truck experienced significant damage at some point in its life. Then I ask: Why did it need to be repaired? Repaired welds often lead to significant damage, often through overloading. This typically indicates that other parts of the unit have seen very rough use even if you can’t spot the signs. Also, who the repairs were completed by matters greatly as well. There’s a big difference between a random shop down the street and a factory certified shop that specializes in these repairs.
Tires are surprisingly informative. Uneven wear patterns may indicate:
Chunking and severe sidewall damage often suggest the truck has spent years operating in harsh environments. One quick look at the tires can reveal a lot about how the forklift has been used.
Forks are consumable items. But they also provide valuable clues.
Look for:
A forklift with damaged forks may have spent years lifting loads beyond its intended capacity. There are plenty of signs to watch out for to spot fork wear and tear before it becomes a problem.
Some buyers see a little hydraulic oil and think “That’s an easy fix.” Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t.
Hydraulic leaks can originate from:
The leak itself isn’t always the biggest concern. It’s understanding why it’s leaking. This is going to tell you if you have a problem that will cost you a hundred dollars VS thousands.
Most people never do this. They walk around the truck. Drive it. Raise the mast. Then they’re ready to buy. I always want to see underneath.
I’m looking for:
The underside often reveals years of abuse that fresh paint can’t hide. Turn the truck on and leave it running in the same spot unmoving for 10 minutes. When the time is up move the truck and inspect the ground where you had it parked. Do you see any drops or slick spots?
A forklift can tell you a lot before it ever moves.
Listen for:
Experienced technicians often identify problems with their ears before they ever pick up a wrench.
This may surprise some buyers. A fresh coat of paint doesn’t increase the value of a forklift at all. Nor does it increase its reliability. In fact, I become more observant when I see a freshly painted truck.
Why? Because paint can hide:
I’m not saying fresh paint is bad. I’m saying it shouldn’t influence your buying decision. The mechanical condition is what matters.
Whenever possible, I ask for documentation.
Things like:
A forklift with documented maintenance history is usually a safer investment than one with no history at all. Good records tell me the previous owner cared about the equipment.
Most abused forklifts don’t advertise that they’ve been abused. The clues are subtle. You have to know where to look.
That’s why two forklifts with the same year, model, capacity, & hours can have dramatically different values. One may provide years of reliable service. The other may become a repair project from day one.

Every week I talk with companies looking to purchase used forklifts. One question comes up over and over is, “I found a cheaper forklift from a private seller (or at auction). Should I buy it?”
My answer is always the same:
Maybe.
There are excellent forklifts sold by private companies. There are also incredible values to be found at equipment auctions. I’ve purchased equipment from both. But there’s a major difference between finding a bargain and buying blind.
The lower purchase price often comes with additional risks that many buyers don’t recognize until after the forklift arrives.
Ive talked about this before but it’s easy to compare two forklifts online.
Truck A: $18,000
Truck B: $24,000
Most buyers immediately focus on the $6,000 difference, but experienced buyers ask a different question: “Why is it cheaper?” Sometimes it’s simply because the seller wants it gone. Other times… There’s a reason.
When buying from a private seller or auction, information is often limited.
You may not know:
A forklift can look clean and still have years of deferred maintenance hiding underneath.
Most auctions allow buyers to start the engine, drive a short distance & raise and lower the mast. That’s about it. Unfortunately… Many expensive problems don’t appear during a five-minute inspection.
Issues like:
Often reveal themselves only after the truck goes to work because sellers will often put a quick fix on the problem. Lifters knocking? Extra thick oil. You won’t even realize it’s happening for months unless a specialized tech inspects the lift. These are the mistakes experience avoids.
I often tell customers, The purchase price is only the beginning. A forklift that needs tires, brake work, hydraulic hoses, mast rollers, steering repairs, chains and/or cooling system work; can quickly erase any savings from the initial purchase.
I’ve seen buyers save several thousand dollars up front only to spend even more getting the truck ready for service.
This is one of the biggest differences.
Most auction purchases include, no warranty or repairs, no service after the sale and no guarantee the machine is work-ready. Most auctions even have clauses that say you as the buyer are fully responsible for verifying the condition of the unit yourself and the auction cannot be held accountable if they’ve missed something when disclosing the info to you.
Once the hammer drops… The forklift becomes your responsibility.
This is something many buyers overlook.
I’ve inspected forklifts that had fork positioners, paper roll clamps, carton clamps and longer forks installed years after they left the factory. Sometimes the capacity plate was never updated.
That creates both safety concerns and operational uncertainty. Verifying whats on the dataplate is what’s on the forklift is an important step even seasoned professionals miss.
Not every forklift is easy to support.
Before purchasing, ask yourself:
A bargain becomes much less attractive if the machine sits waiting weeks for parts. Everyone asks the same question, “Is this a good brand.” My answer is always the same regardless of the brand. The best brands all have the parts and service support you need to keep your unit up and running.
This is important. I’ve purchased outstanding forklifts from auctions. I’ve also bought excellent machines directly from end users. The source isn’t the issue. The lack of information is. The more you know before you buy the better your chances of making a great purchase.

]]>When most people think about forklift maintenance during the summer, they picture a warehouse forklift working in a hot building. Maybe a battery needs more water. Maybe the engine runs a little warmer. But high-capacity forklifts live in an entirely different world.
These aren’t 5,000 lb warehouse trucks moving pallets down an aisle.
They’re handling:
And when summer temperatures climb, the challenges increase dramatically.
Over the years, I’ve found that many of the issues affecting high-capacity forklifts aren’t even on the radar of people who only work with standard material handling equipment. The combination of heat, load weight, long duty cycles, and harsh operating environments creates unique challenges that demand attention.
A standard forklift generates heat. A high-capacity forklift can generate a tremendous amount of heat.
Why?
Because everything is larger. Engines, transmissions, hydraulic and cooling systems; but most importantly, much heavier loads.
When you’re lifting 30,000 – 100,000 lbs. The stresses placed on the machine increase exponentially. Summer temperatures simply amplify those stresses.
One of the biggest differences between a standard forklift and a high-capacity forklift is the cooling package.
These machines often rely on large radiators, hydraulic oil coolers, transmission coolers & charge air coolers all working together.
The challenge that many high-capacity forklifts operate outdoors.
That means cooling systems are exposed to dust, dirt, debris, residue and other contaminants. Over time, cooling efficiency drops. And when ambient temperatures hit 90°F or higher, the margin for error becomes very small.
I’ve seen large forklifts run flawlessly in spring and fall. Then summer arrives, and suddenly their lift’s coolant temperatures climb, their hydraulic temperatures increas and their performance begins suffering
The machine didn’t change, the environment did.
Hydraulic systems are the lifeblood of a high-capacity forklift. They’re responsible for moving enormous loads safely and efficiently. But hydraulics create heat… a lot of heat actually.
As temperatures increase hydraulic oil thins, internal leakage increases and efficiency decreases. In severe situations you’re going to see your lift speeds slow, functions become sluggish and components experience accelerated wear.
Why does that matter? A hydraulic system lifting a 5,000 lb pallet and one lifting a 50,000 lb steel coil are operating under very different conditions. At higher capacities, hydraulic temperatures become a critical maintenance concern.
Many warehouse forklifts get periodic breaks throughout the day. High-capacity forklifts often don’t. Especially in plans where you have one machine to keep a large operation going. This is seen frequently in steel processing, port operations & heavy manufacturing.
That means components have less opportunity to cool between cycles. Heat builds, temperatures climb and maintenance becomes even more important.
Most people don’t think about tires until there’s a problem. But on high-capacity forklifts, tire temperatures can become significant. These machines place tremendous loads on their tires.
When operating on ground like asphalt or concrete during hot weather can cause wear you might not expect. As the surface temperature of the ground rises, tire temp increases as well. You end up with premature wear, increased chunking, extra tire degradation and overall reduced tire life.
Considering the cost of high-capacity tires, that’s not something operators want to ignore.
One topic that doesn’t get enough attention is operator comfort.
High-capacity forklifts often work outdoors in direct sunlight. And summer heat affects people just as much as machines. Your drivers can experience fatigue & dehydration which can lead to slower reaction times. When operators are handling loads weighing tens of thousands of pounds, focus becomes critical.
Whether you want to acknowledge it or not; comfort isn’t a luxury. It’s a safety issue.
I’ve said it before, and summer reinforces it every year: Preventative maintenance is always cheaper than downtime. Especially with high-capacity forklifts.
Before temperatures peak, operators and maintenance teams should inspect:
Small issues become major failures much faster when extreme heat enters the equation.
The higher the capacity, the smaller the margin for error. A minor cooling issue on a warehouse forklift may create an inconvenience. A cooling issue on a 70,000 lb forklift handling critical production material can create a major operational problem.
The scale changes everything.
Summer is tough on all forklifts. But high-capacity forklifts face challenges that most standard material handling equipment never encounters.
One thing I’ve learned from working around high-capacity equipment is this: Heat exposes weaknesses.
A partially clogged radiator. A worn hydraulic component. A neglected tire. A cooling system that’s barely keeping up.
Summer finds those weaknesses quickly and when you’re operating forklifts capable of lifting tens of thousands of pounds, reliability isn’t just about productivity. It’s about safety. That’s why the best high-capacity operations treat summer preparation as a critical part of their maintenance strategy, not an afterthought.
